SENSORY TESTING FILAMENTS

DESCRIPTION OF MONOFILAMENT TEST LEVELS

Our monofilament material is color-coded for diameter and
threshold level. Color-coding of the monofilament for the 6 eliminates
one source of error in the very small diameter hairs being placed in
the wrong handle during their manufacture, and makes it easier to
see the monofilament application on the skin.  Examiners can recognize
a correctly calibrated or wrongly marked monofilament by its color.

The Monofilaments can be used for:

  • Screening:  Marking the Monofilament number or color on
drawing of hands, feet, or other body part where tested makes
    a permanent record.

  • Mapping:   Coloring in the area for monofilament level  recognized on a drawing of the hands and feet or other body part, produces a sensory map that is meaningful to the patients, their families, health care workers, physicians, and others in health care delivery, and records areas vulnerable to injury, blisters, and amputations from infections.

  • Monitoring:  Serial screens or maps can subsequently compared in repeat testing, and directly compared with treatment.  Changes in the upgrading or downgrading of status can be identified and compared along side of changes in treatment.
